Siemens – Launching a New Business in a New Domain

In 1995, when I had to move from Siemens' Corporate Office to a Business Unit, I proactively sought to enter the emerging telecom space despite no prior experience in the domain, and joined the Telecom Business. I became part of the founding team that built and led Siemens’ private operator telecom business in India.
Key responsibilities included:

• Negotiating and finalising contracts with various operators across multiple circles; annual business volume in excess of US $60 million.

• Managing greenfield, turnkey mobile and basic services projects in multiple telecom circles across the country.

• Overseeing vendor management and full P&L responsibility (annual business over US $60 million).

• Turning around loss-making projects into profitable operations.

This experience laid the foundation for understanding what it takes to start, grow, and scale new ventures from the ground up.

 

Reliance Jio / HFCL – Building One of the Largest Telecom Rollouts

As a core team member of the Reliance Jio network rollout, I led Field Commercial Services for one of the largest telecom deployments globally.
Highlights of the engagement:

• Started, structured, and managed commercial operations through the entire project lifecycle.

• Built the material accounting function for assets exceeding US $18.5 billion.

• Designed work processes that enabled outside-plant contractors to receive payments within 15 days.

• Travelled across telecom circles to decentralise commercial operations.

• Ensured capitalization readiness across 300,000+ sites on launch day.

 

This project demonstrated how strategic planning, systems thinking, and on-ground execution can power nation-scale growth from scratch.
